Visitor

A visitor visa is also called a temporary resident visa. It shows that you meet the requirements needed to enter Canada.

Most travellers need a visitor visa to travel to Canada but in some cases you may not need a visa. In some cases you may need only an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to visit or transit through Canada. eTA is an entry requirement for foreign nationals travelling to Canada from countries that are exempt from applying for visitor visa.

Most people need a visa or an eTA to travel to Canada – not both. Applying for an eTA is a simple online process and most applicants get their eTA approval via an email within minutes.

To be eligible for a visitor visa you must meet some basic requirements, such as:

  • have a valid travel document, like a passport
  • have no criminal or immigration-related convictions
  • be in good health
  • convince an immigration officer that you have have ties with your home country, such as a job, home, financial assets or family
  • convince an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit
  • have enough money for your stay (amount of money depends on how long you will stay and the type of accommodation)
